On May 1, the Xinhua Bookstore in Brooklyn, New York, held a ribbon-cutting ceremony to mark its grand opening. This is the fifth Xinhua Bookstore established by China National Publications Import & Export (Group) Corporation (hereinafter referred to as CNPIEC) following locations in Flushing, New York; San Diego; New Jersey; and London, England.
Kong Jing, Cultural Consul at the Chinese Consulate General in New York, and Zhao Jie, Vice President of the U.S.-China Chamber of Commerce, attended the event to offer congratulations and perform the ribbon-cutting. Attendees expressed their hope that the opening of the Brooklyn Xinhua Bookstore would continue to provide New York’s Chinese community with a diverse range of publications to meet their cultural and informational needs and promote cultural exchange between China and the United States.
It is reported that the Brooklyn Xinhua Bookstore is located on 8th Avenue in Brooklyn, known as New York’s “Third Chinatown.” With a sales area of 260 square meters, it offers more than 20,000 titles, including various publications and other cultural goods. Building on the successful operational experience of the Flushing Xinhua Bookstore, this new location will provide higher-quality services to local Chinese residents and other Chinese-reading audiences.
In August 2008, the first overseas Xinhua Bookstore opened in the Chinese-American community of Flushing, Queens, New York. This marked an extension of the Xinhua Bookstore brand and played a positive role in helping overseas Chinese and foreigners better understand China and contemporary Chinese culture. The Xinhua Bookstore’s striking red sign has become a familiar sight on the streets of these cities, with many Chinese residents and overseas Chinese taking photos and leaving messages in front of the store. It is reported that China National Publications Import & Export Corporation recently awarded bonuses to both the profitable Flushing Xinhua Bookstore and the newly opened Brooklyn Xinhua Bookstore.
